Glögg Blög

It may have made more sense to post this BEFORE the holidays. Looking on the bright side... I guess I'm just early for next year. For New Years Eve, I asked my dad (who works at a Scandinavian goods importing company in northern MN: http://www.bergquistimports.com/) to bring home a bottle of a delicious traditional Swedish mulled wine called glögg. Unfortunately, there must have been a run on the stuff and so dad came home with no glögg in hand. I decided to find a recipe and to attempt my own batch from scratch. I found the following recipe online and made a few changes. The final product was perhaps the most delicious mulled wine type beverage I've ever tasted!

Note: The first part of the recipe uses a boxed "fruit soup" mix that can be found in some Scandinavian gift shops. If you don't have access to one of these gems, use 2 cups of unsweetened grape or blueberry juice plus 2 cups of water.

Blueberry Glögg (adapted from Green Kitchen Stories)

4 c. water
1 package of Swedish Blueberry Soup Mix (see Note above)

Bring water to a boil in medium sauce pan. Add Soup Mix. If using juice and water, simply bring these to a boil.

1 c. blueberries

Add blueberries and bring to a boil. Then simmer for 10 minutes. Using an immersion blender, blend the blueberries until the mixture is smooth (any pieces of blueberry that remain can be strained in the last step).

Peel of 1 organic orange (washed)
10 whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
2 star anise
1 inch fresh ginger (peeled and chopped)
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

Add the orange peel, spices, and vanilla extract to the mix.

1 bottle of red wine (I used a Malbec)

Add wine and simmer for 20 minutes.

Raisins
Rum

Place 7 raisins in each glass. Add a splash (really, however much you want!) of rum to each glass and let the raisins soak in the rum while the glögg is simmering. After 20 minutes, strain the wine mixture. Add the glögg to the prepared glasses, serve and celebrate (remember to look back - reflect on the year gone by and toast to the year ahead)! Skol!

(Thanks Dad and Kristy for the entertainment...and for naming this post!)
